At Brooktree Film Lab, we understand that different projects require different levels of detail and resolution. That’s why we offer two different scanners and three tailored scan size options—Web, Large, and Extra Large—that cater to various needs and budgets. Here’s a breakdown of each size and some real-world examples of how they can be used, so you can choose the perfect fit for your film scans.
Scan Size Options:
Web Scans
Ideal for social sharing, Web scans offer a lower resolution, perfect for displaying your photos on digital platforms or printing up to a 5×7. This size keeps file sizes manageable, making it a great choice for photographers looking to archive memories online or share them across social media.
Large Scans
Offering more flexibility than Web scans, Large scans allow room for cropping without sacrificing too much quality. These scans are suitable for printing up to an 8×10, giving you the freedom to make minor adjustments while still retaining high image quality.
Extra Large Scans
Extra Large scans provide the maximum resolution possible on our Noritsu and Frontier scanners, allowing for prints of 16×20 and beyond. This option is ideal for high-quality print work, enlargements, or projects where precise editing is needed. Extra-large scans offer maximum flexibility with cropping, giving you the most control over your images.
Film Scanning with Noritsu and Frontier Scanners
Brooktree uses a Noritsu HS1800 by default, but we also offer a Frontier SP3000 scanner as an option for photographers by request. Each scanner is designed to handle a range of film sizes and resolutions. Both scanners are equipped to capture the unique qualities of your film, from the vibrant tones to the subtle grain that makes each frame special. Check out the table provided below where you can see the exact pixel dimensions offered for each film size, ensuring you choose the best option for your project! Please note: Frontier scans will be slightly lower in resolution
Noritsu Scan Sizes
*For half-frame 35mm halve the resolution on the long side (ie: Extra Large would be about 3387 x 4492) for xPan it is just about, but not quite, double the same number (ie: Extra Large would be 12297 x 4492). If you have questions on a specific format please feel free to reach out!
Which Scanner Should You Choose?
Choosing the right scanner can make a big difference in how your images look and feel! Our Noritsu scanner offers higher resolution scans, perfect for capturing the sharpest details in each frame. For black-and-white film, we highly recommend the Noritsu to achieve the best clarity and tonal range.
On the other hand, the Frontier scanner is known for its rich, saturated color profiles, making it ideal for color film when you want those tones to pop! Each scanner brings out unique qualities in your film, so consider your artistic goals—or reach out for advice on the best choice for your project!
